The August 2016 Local Government Elections results created a number of hung municipalities around the country, Gauteng had a share of them. Hung municipalities are simple municipalities that could not be governed by one party without the help of another. In the State of Governance in Gauteng Municipalities Roundtable debate convened by the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) in Sandton yesterday (3/08/2017), MEC for CoGTA, Mr Paul Mashatile stated that hung municipalities wrong footed the department because many of them could not function optimally until recent.
The Speaker of the City of Joburg Council, Councillor Vasco Da Gama agreed with the MEC, Da Gama says, hung municipalities are made difficult to run by councilors playing party politics in the council and officials who are reluctant to work with the new party. However, Da Gama further stated that the situation has improved since last year, parties are now getting one another.
